That day, Patty reported seeing a white rabbit hopping through the backyard. Susie quickly built a trap out of a box and a windfall oak branch, then waited in the thorn bushes for the rabbit to come by again. Patty sat on the porch in mom's rocking chair, laughing the silent snicker that now contorted her face. Fanciful Susie, Patty had called her, a nickname that stuck like grits to the bottom of the bowl.

Susie went to the door, stepped out into the hallway, counted to ten. I am here in the new millennium, she said to herself. Patty has been in the ground for eight years. This is not real. When she returned to the room, her sister was gone.
